Ar. Priyanshi Shah: What led you to discover your love for creation?

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: From a young age, my mind has been brimming with creativity. I found joy in gathering discarded household items like used containers, matchboxes, and various knick-knacks, transforming them into practical items or works of art. At the tender age of 12, I proudly curated a small exhibition showcasing my craftmanship. The proceeds from this venture allowed me to purchase my first watch, marking the inception of my entrepreneurial journey.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: What encouraged you to become an Architect and how did you start your career in this field?

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: I founded Sparc Design In 2010. I was inspired by the fire in my belly to design and create. Inspired by the infinite boundaries of design possibilities, fueled by my power to change people's lifestyles. After graduating from Sir JJ College of Architecture, like most Architects, I aspired to start my own firm. I took the plunge 6 years later after honing my skills with the best design firms in the industry.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: Describe your firm’s design philosophy, a notion displayed in every project you do.?

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: Sparc has established itself as a niche design firm with innovative design thinking, making its mark in the design world. Sparc Design Studio is known for its personally tailored designs and bold use of colours. Sparc Design’s professional approach and innovative and out-of-the-box design thinking sets the firm apart from the rest.

The USP of the brand Sparc Design is Innovative design thinking ability and a strong reference to context - a notion visible in most of their projects.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: Explain the design process and how it unfolds to create such unique designs.?

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: The design process begins with meeting and understanding our clients through extremely detailed questionnaires to understand them and their lifestyles in depth. We then present layouts and mood boards to help them understand our interpretations of their preferences. We proceed with 3D visuals, sometimes walkthroughs. Based on the approvals we help clients with a detailed budget of the project, after the approval of which the project proceeds towards detailed working drawing followed by the execution stage.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: How do you prioritise the needs and preferences of individuals inhabiting the spaces? 

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: We meticulously delve into the unique requirements of each occupant through comprehensive questionnaires and interactive sessions aimed at fostering open expression. Prioritizing these individual preferences, we meticulously integrate them into the design process to ensure a tailor-made solution that truly resonates with each client.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: What features, such as access to natural light, ventilation, green spaces, and biophilic design elements, are integrated to promote physical and mental well-being?

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: In our designs, we prioritize features that promote both physical and mental well-being. Access to natural light is maximized to create bright and uplifting spaces, while strategic ventilation systems ensure optimal air quality and circulation. We integrate green spaces, meditative zones and biophilic design elements to foster a connection with nature, which has been shown to reduce stress and enhance overall well-being. By carefully considering these elements, we create environments that nurture both body and mind.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: Can you describe a recent project you've worked on? What was your role, and what were the key challenges you faced?

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: A  recent project we completed was “A Piece of Sky.” We were the architectural and interior designers for the project.

At dusk, seamlessly weaves itself into the very fabric of this home's architecture and interior.

While our clients were amazing, it was initially challenging to help them understand the importance of creating a uniform theme and colour palette for the project. We crafted a sculptural ferrocrete staircase and executing this on site has several challenges overcome by a dedicated design as well as execution team.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: How do you communicate complex architectural concepts to clients, team members, and stakeholders?

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: To effectively communicate complex architectural concepts, we rely on highly realistic visuals generated through a range of sophisticated software tools such as SketchUp, 3Ds Max, Rhino, and Grasshopper. The selection of software depends on the intricacy of the project. Additionally, we enhance understanding by presenting relevant examples and case studies that closely align with the essence of our intended message.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: How do you stay updated on the latest advancements in architectural technology and design trends?

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: Staying abreast of the latest advancements in architectural technology and design trends is crucial to our practice. We employ a multi-faceted approach to remain informed, including continuous research into industry publications, attendance at relevant conferences, seminars, and workshops, and active engagement with professional networks. Additionally, we foster collaborations with leading experts and institutions to exchange insights and explore emerging innovations. Embracing ongoing learning and adaptation ensures that our designs remain at the forefront of the evolving architectural landscape.

Ar. Priyanshi Shah: In your opinion, what are the current challenges facing the architecture industry in India? 

Ar. Suhani Lal Sanghra: In the architecture industry in India, several challenges persistently shape the landscape. One significant issue is the rapid urbanization coupled with a growing population, leading to increased demand for infrastructure and sustainable urban development. Balancing this demand with environmental conservation and resource management presents a complex challenge.

Additionally, regulatory hurdles and bureaucratic processes can hinder the timely execution of projects, affecting both efficiency and innovation. Addressing these challenges requires fostering collaboration between government bodies, private sector stakeholders, and communities to streamline processes and ensure sustainable development.

There is a pressing need for greater emphasis on research and innovation to address evolving societal needs and technological advancements. Encouraging interdisciplinary approaches and investing in skill development can help architects adapt to changing demands and contribute meaningfully to India's built environment.

You're painting a picture of boundless inspiration! Outside of your passion for design, what other interests have sparked curiosity and creativity?

Travel, Adventure sports, Music, Dancing

One architecture lesson you learned, during your college days?

Whatever you imagine can be created so think wild!

Favourite travel destination & why?

I love to explore a new destination every time I travel, so far it's been New Zealand because of the nature and the wide range of activities the place offers. 

Is there a particular dream project that you'd like to work on?

Yes a resort project, implying bamboo, cob and sustainable practices.
