FII, also popularly known as Canadian Wood in India, is a crown corporation of the government of British Columbia, the western most province of Canada and promotes its wood products and technology in the offshore markets.
A pioneer in championing sustainability and use of environment friendly building materials alongside green building practices. FII also provided technical support and handholding to eco-friendly projects.
Canadian wood hosts seminars and workshops to educate and train its target audience about use of natural materials such as wood by sharing best practices in manufacturing and information on certification, sustainability and legality of imported wood with architects/designers; builders/developers and project owners and managers including selection of the appropriate species and grades for specific applications.
Certification of Canadian wood products by independent global audit bodies such as PEFC and/or FSC demonstrates Canada’s commitment to responsible forestry for combating global warming caused by deforestation/habitat destruction and in-turn mitigation of carbon footprint. These certifications boost brand trust and appeal to environmentally conscious manufacturers and consumers and encourages responsible consumption to ensure that wood is available forever.
Canadian wood is essentially a collection of 5 distinct species e.g. Western Hemlock, Douglas-fir, Yellow Cedar, Western Red Cedar, and SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir) each with its unique properties suitable for a variety of uses in both reman and structural applications.
1. Western Hemlock: Western Hemlock is prized for its fine texture and straight, uniform grain. Reduced moisture content after proper kiln seasoning provides resistance to decay, stability and strength that makes it an excellent choice for applications such as indoor furniture, interior fitouts, mouldings and general construction. Its even grain provides superb machining properties, making it ideal for a variety of uses.
2. Douglas Fir: Recognized globally for its superior strength-to-weight ratio, Douglas-fir is the preferred species for heavy structural applications, including post and beam construction. This wood is also preferred for glue-laminated beams (glulam), roofing structures, doors/door jambs and millwork, where both strength and aesthetic appeal are important.
3. Yellow Cedar: A naturally durable wood performs exemplarily both against natural elements and insects. It is known for its fine texture and straight grain. Yellow Cedar is widely used in marine applications, such as oars and marine pilings, as well as for shingles and decorative panelling. Its structural grades are suitable for outdoor applications like doors and door frames, window and window frames, outdoor furniture, pergola, cladding, decking, and landscaping, combining beauty with durability.
4. Western Red Cedar: Perhaps the lightest naturally durable wood known to mankind with exceptional resistance to rot, termites and decay. Western red cedar is perfect for exterior applications like roofing shingles, siding, decking, cladding, outdoor furniture, pergolas/gazebos and greenhouses. Its rich colour and soft texture also make it an ideal material for interior design, including panelling, furniture and cabinetry.
5. SPF (Spruce-pine-fir): SPF is a group of three species that grow together and are thus harvested and processed together. SPF comprises Engelmann Spruce, Lodgepole Pine, and Subalpine Fir and is known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and dimensional stability. SPF is predominantly used for framing and building with wood, thanks to its superior gluing properties and stress rating. Due to its versatile nature, it is also common to find it being used for furniture, packaging, crating and pelleting etc.
All Canadian wood species are legally harvested from sustainably managed forests – which are certified by internationally recognised standards. As a rule, Canadian forest products industry puts back three times more trees into the forest than it harvests annually to preserve the environment and its biodiversity. This commitment ensures that despite Canada being a leading softwood lumber exporter does not have to worry about deforestation.
In keeping with its brand ethos, Canadian wood is participating in Indiawood Trade Fair being held from March 6 - 9, 2025 at the India Expo Mart (IEML) in Greater Noida (Delhi/NCR). A 160 sqm island stall open on 3 sides is being set up to showcase products made of Canadian wood species and welcome our target audience. The Canadian Wood stall will also have Canadian Wood suppliers from B.C. Canada is present to engage with Indian buyers during the duration of the trade fair. These lumber companies prioritise responsible forest management and fair-trade practices. This ensures that Canadian wood meets the highest environmental and corporate responsibility standards, including community engagement and the empowerment of local stakeholders, while reinforcing our commitment to both sustainability and environmentally fair trade practices.
