In a recent conversation, Sunil Kumar Agarwal, Whole Time Director and a founding member of Kamdhenu Ltd. shared his thoughts in detail on various facets of construction including infusion of technology, impact on the environment, workforce safety, and future course of action. Excerpts:

In recent years, what innovative materials or technologies have had the most significant impact on steel structure design and construction processes?

In the evolving landscape of steel structure design and construction, innovative materials and technologies are reshaping the industry. High-strength steels, self-compacting concrete, and Building Information Modelling (BIM) are among the notable advancements, while 3D printing, robotics, automation, and smart materials further influence the way we design and build steel structures. As progress continues, we foresee ongoing innovation and enhanced efficiency in the field.

At Kamdhenu, we pride ourselves on being pioneers in innovation and technology. Notably, we are the first company in India to introduce PAS (Power Alloy Steel) 10000—a cutting-edge power alloy steel product poised to redefine the construction landscape of the country.

How are sustainability and environmental concerns shaping the steel structure industry?

The steel industry is acutely aware of the necessity to reduce its environmental impact and is actively implementing diverse measures to attain this imperative goal. This commitment involves substantial investments in cutting-edge technologies to reduce energy consumption and emissions, coupled with an increased integration of recycled scrap steel. The demand for environmentally responsible steel products is growing, fuelled by heightened environmental awareness and corporate sustainability objectives.

The environmental repercussions of a sub-optimal freight transportation network are significant due to vehicular emissions. To address this, at Kamdhenu Ltd., we have strategically positioned our network of over 80 franchisee units and 8500+ distributors nationwide. This strategic placement allows us to meet market demands while minimizing the environmental impact associated with transportation.

Kamdhenu Ltd. upholds an unwavering commitment to sustainability, actively working to diminish our environmental footprint. Our initiatives include the development of sustainable and eco-friendly steel products, employing innovative approaches. Collaborating with suppliers is a crucial element of our strategy, focused on reducing the environmental impact throughout the supply chain. Furthermore, we are dedicating substantial resources to research and development, pioneering novel methods to decrease our overall environmental footprint.

Safety is a paramount concern in construction. What innovative safety measures or technologies have you seen implemented to protect workers in steel structure projects?

Safety takes precedence in construction, particularly in steel structure projects, where a range of innovative measures and technologies are being employed to safeguard workers. Prefabricated steel components, a growing trend, are aiding in diminishing the time workers spend at elevated heights, thereby mitigating the risk of falls.

Construction companies are proactively investing in safety training programs tailored to the unique hazards associated with steel structure construction. These programs equip workers with the knowledge and skills needed to safely execute their tasks. By incorporating these progressive safety measures and technologies, construction companies play a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being of their workforce and reducing the likelihood of accidents.

How do you address the skills gap and workforce development challenges in the steel structure industry, especially considering the need for specialized expertise?

Since 2009, we have been hosting Mason Meet programs nationwide, dedicated to educating and empowering masons with comprehensive knowledge of construction and structural safety. Our mission is to enhance the skills and uplift the unskilled workforce across the country. We prioritise consistent engagement with construction workers, fostering a continuous dialogue.

These programs serve as a platform for disseminating the latest information within the construction sector to individuals engaged in construction and masonry work. By facilitating regular interactions and providing valuable insights, we contribute to the professional development of these workers, ensuring they stay abreast of the industry's advancements.
